Northeast men’s golf mixes international talent with local newcomers

Northeast’s men’s golf team entered the fall with an experienced international standout and several promising local players, according to its August 31 season preview.

Olof Behle of Sweden returned after winning the Gulf District title in a five-player playoff and finishing in the upper half of the national tournament field. Newcomer Emil Grossmann of Germany and transfer Miles Russell from Loyola added depth for coach Derek DeVaughn.

Booneville’s Ames Hughes and Kossuth’s Ian Jackson were among the returners. Local newcomers included Burke Ericksen of Baldwyn, Brooks Seago of Biggersville, Owen Oswalt of Tupelo Christian and Occoee Pina of Corinth.

Ericksen placed sixth at the Class 2A state tournament. Seago contributed to Biggersville’s Class 1A championship team, while Oswalt finished runner-up individually in that classification. Northeast’s fall schedule opened with a national preview September 1-2, followed by its own invitational September 14-15 at Shiloh Ridge in Corinth.
