Jumpertown leans on an Ashland road win in a tough 1A season

Jumpertown’s two wins this volleyball season came 10 days apart, and they looked nothing alike.

The first was the better of the two. On Aug. 10, Jumpertown went on the road and beat Ashland 3-1 — the program’s only multi-set win of the year and its most complete performance. The second came Aug. 20 at Thrasher, a 1-0 result that evened the county series after Thrasher had swept Jumpertown nine days earlier.

Jumpertown sits 2-11 with a 5-32 set record. An MVPI rating of 16.1 ranks the program No. 219 of 245 statewide and No. 32 of 36 in Class 1A — narrowly ahead of county rival Thrasher, with both teams carrying an identical -3.4 strength of schedule.

The rest of the season has been difficult. Jumpertown has been swept in 10 of its 11 losses. The exception was a 1-3 loss at home to Houlka on Aug. 25, the only match outside the Ashland win where Jumpertown claimed a set.

The current stretch is the hardest of the year: six straight losses since Aug. 22, including 0-3 results against Pine Grove, Falkner and Biggersville, the last of those on Sept. 8.

The in-county draw has not helped. Jumpertown has played 13 matches, among the fewest in Prentiss County, and six of them came against county opponents — Thrasher twice, Wheeler twice, New Site and Booneville. That is a demanding rotation for a program still building.

The Ashland win remains the marker. It is the one night this season everything came together across four full sets.
