Northeast cross-country targets national stage in third season

Northeast’s cross-country teams entered their third season aiming to build on their early progress under coach Aaron Hight. The August 28 preview highlighted experienced returners, local newcomers and a goal of reaching the national meet.

Sunshine Fulgham of East Union and Sarah Kate Childs of Kossuth returned for the women. Newcomers included Landyn McMillan of Saltillo, Meredith Gilmore of Kossuth, Macie Arnold of Wheeler and Addison Lutz of Alcorn Central.

The men returned Ryder Warhurst of Alcorn Central and Ricky Venegas of Corinth. Incoming runners included state champion Nathan Russell of Hickory Flat, Jack Denton of Saltillo, Aiden James of West Union and Nathanael Wilbanks of Corinth.

Both teams had earned conference academic team honors, and the women finished second nationally in the academic standings. The season was scheduled to open August 29 at the Freed Speed meet, with regional competition in Huntsville in late October and nationals in mid-November.
