New Site boys turning heads with early season play, ranked #2 in state
The New Site boys basketball team, despite losing only one senior from a team that made it to the second round of last years playoffs and having a stellar summer that resulted in a Summer Slam tournament victory, was being somewhat overlooked heading in to this season.
After a pair of big wins to start the year, no one is overlooking them any longer.
The Royals took out 4A opponent Tishomingo County and top 4A contender Pontotoc in convincing fashion at the Hound Dog Classic and are ranked as the #2 team in 2A by the Mississippi Sports Network.
New Site has gotten praise for their overall team play, but no single player has come onto the scene more than Junior Ethan Eaton, who plays with a motor set to go at all times. He has been named the player of the game by Magnolia Hoops in their opening night win over Tish and the top performer in their game against Pontotoc.
Eaton leads the team with 23.5 ppg early this season. Couple that with the steady hand running the offense and long range ability of Walker Moreland and the Royals have a formidable backcourt.
What makes New Site so dangerous this season is their ability to have an outside game as well as additional playmakers to go with their inside presence.
Carson Fitzsimmons is averaging 11.5 ppg while pullign down 9 rebounds per contest. 6’7″ Dalton Pounds has been a menace down low, altering shots on defense and working the post to the tune of 6 points and 4 rebounds per game.
If the Royals continue to get multi-facted production from their proven players and contribtions from their other players, they could be in store for a deep playoff run.
